Higher Standard of Therapy in NYC
If you experience anxiety, depression, relationship issues, ADHD, OCD, or other emotional and behavioral difficulties, we're here to help. Behavioral Health of New York (BHNY) founded by Dr. Mitchell S. Levy, is a private practice of PhD-level psychologists who specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based therapy methods backed by science. Many clients achieve significant progress with CBT in a relatively short period of time. Other clients benefit from interpersonal or relationship-oriented therapy.
When we work together, we’ll break down your patterns of thinking and behaviors that cause challenges and hold you back from enjoying life. You’ll develop the skills to feel better and create positive change. Most clients find our approach a very refreshing change from their former therapy.
Conditions We Treat
BHNY offers effective, evidence-based treatment for many types of conditions that clients are seeking to overcome.

How to Find a Therapist in New York That’s Right for You
At BHNY, we understand finding the right therapist in NYC can be very confusing and overwhelming! It’s worth the effort to find the right fit, because it’s very important for your success in therapy. On your initial consultation Dr. Levy will take the time to determine the therapy method and therapist in our practice best suited to you. We believe it’s necessary to spend extra time and careful thought into who you’ll be working with because the right fit is essential for your success.
On your initial consultation some of the things Dr. Levy will discuss with you are:
Dr. Levy will be interested in what brings you to therapy and what you want to work on. Do you need help managing anxiety? Depression? Is it a relationship issue? Or work stress? If you have multiple issues to address it's helpful to prioritize them so we can help you with what's most pressing initially, and then tackle the rest as therapy progresses.
It’s also important to understand how your issues may be impacting your daily life. For example, is your work being affected? Are your relationships impacted? Is it causing any disruptions with your family? This can help us better understand your challenges while gaining diagnostic insight.
Dr. Levy will want to know about your experience with therapy in the past. How satisfied were you? If it helped, what specifically worked for you? If not, what didn’t work? What did you like or dislike about it? What did you learn about yourself? This will be quite helpful in determining the right fit for you in our practice.
We believe therapy is more productive with goals and objectives. Understanding what you want to achieve in therapy, what challenges you’d like to overcome, and what areas of your life you’re hoping to improve is an integral part of our consultation process.
Upon completing your consultation, Dr. Levy then gives careful consideration as to which BHNY therapist - along with which therapy method - will be an optimal fit for you. Factors such as the clinician’s area of expertise, therapeutic strengths, and communication style will all be considered to best align with your needs.
New York Therapy Services You Can Trust
Why choose Behavioral Health of New York?
Evidence-Based Therapy. At BHNY we use therapy methods backed by scientific research. This means we use treatments that have been proven effective for many conditions, giving clients a high standard of care.
PhD-Level Psychologists. While many practices have only masters level counselors, we have mostly PhD-level Psychologists. Psychologists receive the highest level of education and training of mental health therapists.
Male Psychologists. Most therapy practices are predominantly female. In fact, it’s difficult to find a male psychologist in New York City. Having mostly male psychologists at BHNY makes us unique. This can be particularly helpful to male clients who feel more comfortable working with a man, or, for female clients seeking a male perspective on certain issues they'd like to overcome in therapy.
Professional Initial Consultation: While many practices employ an intake coordinator without a mental health degree to assign you to a therapist, we don’t believe that’s an effective way to set up your treatment. At BHNY your initial consultation is with our practice director, Dr. Mitchell S. Levy. You’ll receive an in-depth consultation to determine which therapy method and which psychologist in our practice is best suited to you. Having the right fit is very important for your treatment success.
Types of Therapy We Practice
Behavioral Health of NY provides a range of therapy treatment options and services for patients, including cognitive behavioral therapy in NYC and more. If you need mental health services and therapy in the Upper East Side or adjacent neighborhoods of the Upper West Side, Midtown, or Downtown, a licensed psychologist or therapist from our NYC office can help. Here are some examples of the types of therapy we practice:
CBT is an effective method for treating a range of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks, and social phobias. With decades of research behind it, CBT is one of the most well-supported evidence-based therapies, backed by over 2,000 studies. Many of our psychologists have extensive training in CBT and other scientifically based therapy.
This option serves as an excellent form of OCD therapy in NYC, as it helps to expose a person to a feared situation or a feared object in a safe, neutral environment. During our ERP therapy in NYC, patients will learn how to cope with anxiety, OCD, and other mental health issues with exposure, which helps with distress tolerance and refraining from compulsive behavior. Over time, ERP therapy helps clients become less afraid and choose healthier behaviors over compulsions.
This form of therapy helps patients learn new ways of relating to distressing thoughts and emotions so their thoughts have less power over them. Our ACT therapy in NYC techniques helps patients use helpful tools like anchoring, cognitive defusion, and mindful observation to handle complex thoughts and emotions in a much more effective, grounded way, which can help treat many mental health and behavioral conditions.
Our couples therapists borrow from a variety of different methods to help with communication issues, misunderstandings, and dysfunctional patterns that cause conflicts in a relationship. A therapist can help you find actionable, practical ways to solve problems together.
PE therapy is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy used to treat PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. Studies have shown that PE can significantly reduce the symptoms of PTSD and related mental health issues like anxiety, anger, and depression. In the exposure part of this therapy, you can learn how to gradually approach various feelings, memories, and situations, which can slowly increase comfort and reduce fear from the original trauma.
What Can Therapy Help With?
Our NYC therapy services can help you with a wide array of mental health issues, including:
If you feel very intense levels of worry and concern regularly, you may be dealing with anxiety disorder. Persistent anxiety can lead to increased stress and even difficulty performing daily tasks. A psychologist can provide helpful therapy, including CBT therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Exposure and Response Prevention treatment, to reduce symptoms of anxiety.
Many people can experience depression at some point in life. This common mood disorder causes deep feelings of sadness and emptiness that can cause a loss of interest in daily life. While depression can impact your job and relationships, it’s a treatable condition with the right therapy from a psychologist or therapist.
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is often diagnosed in childhood, but it can also affect adults. Those with ADHD usually have trouble focusing or may act impulsively, leading to problems at work, school, or in social situations. A licensed therapist can provide practical tools and techniques to help you with task initiation, planning/prioritizing, organization, time management, focus, and other executive functioning skills.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder involves having intrusive thoughts, obsessions, rumination, and compulsive behaviors. Fortunately, the right therapy from a trained PhD-level psychologist can help you mitigate these behaviors to lead a more balanced life.

How To Get the Most Out of Therapy
While therapy can help you deal with a variety of mental health issues, there are some things you can do to ensure that you’re getting the most out of the services you receive. First, we recommend having an initial consultation with our director, Dr. Mitchell Levy, to determine the best method for your specific needs. This session will also determine which psychologist or therapist fits you best. Next, we advise that all patients attend therapy sessions weekly. Frequently Asked Questions
Weekly is recommended to start. After certain goals are reached, we may recommend dropping down to every other week before ending treatment.
CBT is different from traditional therapy in that it’s more practical, interactive, and structured, and often yields better results in a shorter period of time. CBT addresses present-day problems versus the past, and teaches tangible skills that can be applied to many different challenges.
Some people can complete therapy in a few sessions, while others require longer treatment. On average, therapy typically takes about 10 to 20 sessions. Some cases are longer or shorter than average, depending on the condition, treatment method, and each individual’s goals.
We work with many different insurance plans, and we can accept insurance depending on your particular plan’s coverage. When you contact our office, we’ll research your insurance benefit to determine the details of your plan. We’ll go over all the details of your coverage with you before your sessions begin.
