Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in NYC

CBT explained on post-its next to a coffee cup

At Behavioral Health of New York, many of our treatments are rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), an evidence-based treatment for a variety of conditions with over 2,000 studies supporting its effectiveness.

CBT allows clients to break the cycle of unwanted or unhelpful thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This process is particularly effective for clients struggling with anxiety and depression, although it can also provide a basis for treating a variety of conditions, including obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, and burnout.

Our NYC therapy practice will apply different types of CBT methods depending on the particular condition being treated. For example, exposure and response prevention (ERP), although based on cognitive behavioral therapy, is often more effective than standard CBT methods for people struggling with OCD.

The effectiveness and versatility of CBT allows us to offer many different therapy methods that address clients’ unique challenges while still using techniques and methodologies that are grounded in research, which is beneficial for successful treatment.

Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that incorporates elements of mindfulness. This allows clients to identify unpleasant thoughts and emotions, accept their existence without judgment, and then choose to behave in ways that are more consistent with their values.

Exposure & Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is a form of CBT that is particularly effective in treating OCD, social anxiety, phobias, and panic attacks. ERP allows clients to confront their fears in a gradual systematic way, lowering their level of distress when exposed to their fear and allowing them to choose healthier responses.

Prolonged Exposure Therapy (PE)

Prolonged exposure therapy is a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy to help people struggling with PTSD. It can be difficult to recall or confront traumatic experiences without experiencing high levels of fear, anxiety, panic, or stress. With PE, clients can learn how to approach their past experiences with trauma in a safe, controlled setting, lowering their level of distress.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)

Interpersonal psychotherapy is a structured form of therapy that seeks to improve a person’s interpersonal relationships and help them heal from loss. It’s particularly effective for people struggling with grief or depression.

Couples Therapy NYC

At BHNY, our approach to couples therapy is to provide structured sessions so couples learn to communicate in a way that lowers each other’s defenses and gets to the core issues in a relatively short period of time. We typically help couples talk to each other in a different way to understand each other better, improve communication and trust, and resolve conflicts.

CBT for Teens

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been effective for teenagers struggling with anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other conditions. CBT gives adolescents a framework through which to recognize and confront unhelpful thoughts, practice social skills, learn coping strategies, improve their self-esteem, and more.
